What is a fluorescent whitening agent (FBW) Or optical brightener agent ( OBA)?
it can excite blue andviolet light, and complement the yellow light on the substrate to have awhitening effect. Generally speaking, a fluorescent whitening agent is to usethe complementary color effect in optics to whiten, brighten or enhance the color of white or light-colored items (such as soap, detergents, textiles, plastics, paper, etc.).
It does not chemically react with items but increasesthe whiteness of objects by optical action and uses fluorescence to increasethe visual sense of whiteness. Therefore, fluorescent whitening agents are alsocalled "optical whitening agents" or "white fluorescentdyes".
Human body safety of adding fluorescent whitening agents insoap
Since the 1950s and 1960s, research on the safety offluorescent whitening agents has begun abroad. Toxicologists from manycountries and independent organizations and research institutions such as theEuropean Chemical Industry Council, the European Soap and DetergentAssociation, the National Institute of Health Sciences of Japan, and the Japan Soap and Detergent Association have conducted comprehensive and in-depthresearch and released reports. The research results show that fluorescentwhitening agents have no skin sensitization, phototoxicity, oral toxicity, dermal toxicity, reproductive toxicity, mutagenicity and carcinogenicity. Theexperimental conclusions on the safety of using fluorescent whitening agentsare supported by detailed test methods, a large amount of experimental data andresult evaluation methods.
At present, the industry standard for fluorescent whiteningagents for detergents in China, "Fluorescent Whitening Agents forDetergents" (QB/T2953-2008), has just been revised and officiallyimplemented on November 1, 2023. "It stipulates the terms and definitions, product classification, requirements, test methods, inspection rules and marks, packaging, transportation and storage of fluorescent whitening agents fordetergents. This standard applies to fluorescent whitening agents added in theformulations of various clothing detergents."
As early as August 2011, the China Cleaning Products IndustryAssociation held a "Expert and Media Meeting on the Safety of FluorescentWhitening Agents for Detergents" in Beijing. Relevant authoritativeexperts also gave the conclusion: "Clothing detergent containingfluorescent whitening agents is safe for the human body and theenvironment." The Pesticide Safety Evaluation and Supervision andInspection Center of the former Ministry of Chemical Industry also conductedtoxicity experiments on fluorescent whitening agent CBS-X (belonging tostilbene biphenyl type). The results confirmed that at a given dose, thefluorescent whitening agent is low toxicity and non-irritating.
Adding fluorescent agents can improve the whiteness ofwashing powder powder or soap body and improve the appearance of detergentproducts and enhance the product grade. The human body safety of fluorescentwhitening agents contained in such products as soap and laundry detergent hasbeen rigorously demonstrated and can be used with confidence.
Face up to the rational use of fluorescent whitening agents
In conclusion, as consumers, rationally choose regularproducts and there is no need to be overly fearful of fluorescent whiteningagents. Therefore, if fluorescence is detected with a purple light flashlightin daily life, there is no need to panic. As long as it is a regular productpurchased through regular channels, it can be used with peace of mind.
In the daily use of regular and qualified soap, laundrydetergent and other washing products, the fluorescent whitening agents addedhave no negative impact on the human body. In fact, not only fluorescentwhitening agents, but the contents of all product additives that meet nationalstandards are within a safe range. It is hoped that the vast number ofconsumers will not be misled by rumors. Whether for daily necessities or food, pay attention to avoiding buying unregulated and unbranded products.
